Downloading and Using Personal Web Server

Personal Web Server (PWS) is for Windows based operating systems only. What it does is allow you to run Active Server Pages (ASP) from your personal machine. You can test them without actually having to upload them to a server that supports them. This is great for just testing purposes OR just to try asp out before you invest the money into a web hosting company that supports ASP. As far as I know, if you are on a Mac you will need to upload your ASP pages to a server that can host and support them in order to test them out.

  • You can download PWS from this link (Windows NT Option Pack):

What we are going to do here, is build an virtual alias to the directory where all your content and database is. With this you will be able to open your browse and type in an http:// address and access this directory on your computer just like something you would on the web, so that it will process .asp pages. Hopefully you have a directory all nice and neat that we can reference. A good example is to the left.

After you download and install PWS, reboot your computer. Once you reboot it, PWS should automatically run in the start tray when you turn on your computer. In the picture below, I have the icon circled that is the PWS icon.

Double click the icon and a new window will appear. Here you need to select the Advanced button to take you to the Advanced Options screen. Then select Add…

An Add Directory window will appear. All you need to do is browse to your directory. In our example at the top of this page we just browsed to the "workshop" folder and left it there. Then as an alias you can type whatever you want. For our example "workshop" would be great so that we know what our alias is.

Now if you open your browser and in the URL path type a URL like below you should be able to pull up your site!
